Engineering is the discipline, art, skill and profession of acquiring and applying scientific, mathematical, economic, social, and practical knowledge, in order to design and build structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes that safely realize improvements to the lives of people.

One who practices engineering is called an engineer, and those licensed to do so may have more formal designations such as Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer, Ingenieur or European Engineer. The broad discipline of engineering encompasses a range of more specialized subdisciplines, each with a more specific emphasis on certain fields of application and particular areas of technology.

The American Engineers’ Council for Professional Development (ECPD, the predecessor of ABET)[1] has defined “engineering” as:

The creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation and safety to life and property.

Effective Team Charter

Too often teams spend a considerable amount of their valuable resources trying to figure out what it is they are supposed to do, writes contributors John Moran, Grace Duffy and Michael Rudis. Before starting any type of a process improvement work, it is important to know where you’re headed. Here’s how a Team Charter can help.

A Team Charter is the official document from the team sponsor that empowers the team to act. It is a written document describing the mission of the team and how this mission is to be accomplished.

The Team Charter is one of the most under-used and under-valued tools available to sponsors, team leaders, and facilitators for helping a team succeed.But it is often overlooked because it is time consuming to develop. To write a clear, concise, and inclusive Team Charter requires great forethought and effort.

Often the sponsor is in such a rush to start the teaming process that they skip the basic step of filling out a Team Charter that clearly defines the goals and objectives to be achieved. When a team is started without a formal Team Charter many meetings are often wasted trying to figure “why we are here, what we should do, and when it should be done.” The team spends a considerable amount of time and energy trying to second guess what the sponsor really wanted when the team was formed. This is a loss of valuable time and talent that could be avoided by designing a clear mission statement prior to the team’s formation. That’s why a sponsor must take the time to fill out a Team Charter.

The Team Charter is an official work contract. This document delineates the strategic goals, boundaries, measures of success, constraints/limits, and available resources. The Team Charter provides a framework for ongoing discussions between the team and its sponsor with regard to the team’s direction and progress.

It is an iterative process until a base line acceptance is established. It must be reviewed on a regular basis by the sponsor, the team leader, facilitator, and team members to ensure that it is reflective of what the team is doing or will be doing in the future.

The following example of the use of a Team Charter in a Public Health Department is an excellent adaptation of the concepts in the original team charter article to provide a guidance document to beginning Process Action Teams.

Kids Vaccination Schedule

More than 1 out of 10 parents of young children in the United States follow an “alternative vaccination schedule” rather than the officially recommended one, according to a new study from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, which also suggests more parents are likely to follow. You can read about the study in a paper published online in the journal Pediatrics on Monday.
Every year, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publish recommended schedules and guidelines for when children and adolescents should receive their vaccine or series of shots against communicable diseases such as: chickenpox (varicella vaccine); measles, mumps rubella (MMR); diptheria, tetanus and pertussis or whooping cough (DTaP); Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib); Hepatitis A and



Hepatitis B (Hep A, Hep B); seasonal influenza; polio (IPV); pneuococcal disease (PCV); and rotavirus (RV). There are two schedules: one covers birth to 6 years and the other covers from age 7 to 18 years. There is also a “catch-up schedule” to help those who need to get back on track.

Dr Amanda Dempsey, assistant professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and colleagues, write that in the US, more and more parents appear to be departing from the CDC’s vaccination schedule. So they decided to see how widespread this was nationwide and also investigate the extent to which those that are currently following the recommended schedule might deviate from it in the future.

To do this they carried out an internet-based survey that took a single “snapshot” of a nationally representative sample of parents of children aged from 6 months to 6 years. Using statistical tools, they then looked at links between various demographic characteristics of the respondents, factors that might influence their decisions, and their use of an alternative vaccination schedule.

748 parents took part (response rate of 61%) in the survey. The results showed that:

Of those who followed an alternative schedule, just over half (53%) refused only certain vaccines, and/or delayed them until their child was older (55%); while 17% reported refusing all vaccines.

Non-black parents, and those whose child did not have a regular health care provider, were the only factors to be significantly linked to following an alternative schedule.

28% of the parents who were following the recommended schedule thought that delaying vaccine doses was safer than the schedule they were following.

And 28% disagreed that the recommended schedule was the best one.

First author Erin L. Richman from the department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and colleagues, write that we already know red and processed meat may increase risk of advanced prostate cancer, and although post-diagnostic data on diet and prostate cancer is “sparse”, there have been suggestions that eating poultry with skin and eggs may hasten the progress of the disease.



So they decided to do a study using dietary data from 27,607 men who had been followed from 1994 to 2008 and who had no cancer at the start of the period.

This group included men who developed prostate cancer that spread to other organs and also who died from

the disease, enabling the researchers to examine total, unprocessed and processed red meat, poultry and egg intake in relation to risk of lethal prostate cancer.

Using a “case only” approach, they also analyzed survival rates in relation to the post-diagnosis consumption of these same foods in 3,127 of men who were initially diagnosed with non-metastatic (ie localized, not yet spread to other organs) prostate cancer during the follow up.

The researchers report that for the risk analysis, they noted there were 199 observed events over 306,715 person years (when you multiply the number of people observed by the number of years each was followed for and compare this to the number of events you are interested in observing, you get a sense of how populated the “map” of available data points for analysis is).

Who is Safet?

My name is Safet Hodzic Mehic and I was born 1967 years in Odzak, Bosnia and Herzegovina. My wish is to finish the project management at Walden University. I want to get a diploma project manager for the reasons I wrote a series of business plans in the field of agriculture and the production and use of electricity. I chose the right direction in this economy because I worked for many years business plans. My wish is to specialize in the production of electric cars because I d ace this start mass production in the future and also my wish is to examine whether a possible perpetual motion machine.

I finished 1986 years electro technician high school and was one of the student generation, and won a good place to competitions in chemistry, physics and mathematics. 1992 years finished Faculty of Economics and declared the best student of 1988 years in the department of social economy in Sarajevo. I studied German in Austria as well as Dutch and English in the Netherlands. I have a very good working experience in the field of agriculture.

I would like during my studies to investigate whether a possible mass production of carbon zinc rechargeable battery in Bosnia-Herzegovina because we have coal mines and zinc here as to whether the machine is possible that we will give you a 100 Watt power supply of 200 Watts. My greatest experience is still related to agriculture, so I now decided to deal with little power. Would be enrolled at Walden University because it is a U.S. university and another reason is that we would hope to gain a good working experience in America, if I got a degree at American University. Another reason is that I was the university first offered the opportunity to study through the computer program is online because I hope that this study adjusted to me at this age.

The notion of 3D is most often taken to apply directly to the gemba – the workplace – and therefore the focus of respect for people is the individual person and their work environment. Kaizen activity targeting 3D conditions aim to make processes clean, easy and safe. This is

important, but insufficient when we look deeper into the respect for humanity principle.

The aim of 3D kaizen activity must be not only to remove the 3D elements but to create environments that respect and draw out human potential for doing good. At minimum this means positively replacing the 3D conditions with clean and uncorrupted processes, suitably challenging work that fulfills our sense of purpose, and safety within the workplace that goes beyond physical and emotional harm and also considers security of employment as well as long-term environmental sustainability. Kaizen activity becomes dull and hollow when we lose sight of the fact that we are pursuing the ideal, pursuing perfection. We must work to replace 3D working conditions with those that are spotless, stimulating and secure.

It is important to never to pursue the two pillars of the Toyota Way separately. They are entwined like DNA. Paired with continuous improvement, respecting humanity means respecting all people, not only those who work within our organizations, requiring that we think beyond just our own organization and its profits, to how we benefit wider society.
